Learning in the Field
Engineering students take their learning into the field as they visit major infrastructure projects.
Students and faculty from Norwich University’s civil engineering and construction management programs recently spent two days visiting major infrastructure projects in Massachusetts and Connecticut, gaining firsthand exposure to engineering and construction in the field.
The trip began in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, where Norwich civil engineering alumnus John Hayden ’85, senior transportation engineer with Stantec, hosted the group at the Twin Cities Rail Trail project. Students toured the construction of a multi-span pedestrian bridge and had the opportunity to speak with professionals from Stantec, MassDOT, and ET&L Construction about the project. Following the visit, Stantec hosted the group for lunch, providing additional time for students to connect with industry professionals.
On Friday, Norwich students joined nearly 400 students and engineering and construction professionals for The Moles Student Day at the $1.3 billion Amtrak Connecticut River Bridge Replacement Project. The large-scale project provided students with a unique opportunity to see heavy civil engineering and construction in action and learn more about the planning, design, coordination, and construction required to deliver major infrastructure projects.
The two-day trip brought together hands-on learning, professional connections, alumni engagement, and time for students to build relationships with one another. Experiences like these are an important part of civil engineering and construction management education at Norwich, allowing students to connect what they learn in the classroom with the projects and professionals shaping the built environment.
The department extends its appreciation to John Hayden, Stantec, MassDOT, ET&L Construction, and The Moles for providing Norwich students with these valuable experiences.
